RMS Titanic wreck was Located Today in 1985

Its been exactly 34 years since the wreck of Ship Titanic, the British luxury liner was located after she had collided with an iceberg and sank into the sea, claiming thousands of lives and hundred thousands of ship supply in April 1912, about 108 years ago.

It was located by a joint U.S. / French expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution about 400 miles east of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic.

The reality has turned out to be very different, and the ship has increasingly deteriorated since she sank in April 1912. Her gradual decay is due to a number of different processes – physical, chemical and biological. She is situated on an undulating, gently sloping area of seabed in Titanic Canyon, which is swept by the Western Boundary Current. Eddies from the current flow constantly across the wreck, scouring the sea bed and keeping sediment from building up over the hull. The current is strong and often changeable, gradually opening up holes in the ship's hull. Salt corrosion eats away at the hull, and it is also affected by galvanic corrosion.

Many schemes have however, been proposed to raise Titanic, including filling the wreck with ping-pong balls, injecting it with 180,000 tons of Vaseline, or using half a million tons of liquid nitrogen to encase it in an iceberg that would float to the surface. However, the wreck is too fragile to be raised and is now protected by a UNESCO convention-wikipedia.
